What is a CL-USA sponsor?

A CL-USA sponsor is an individual or organization that approves of and endorses the CL-USA definition and standards for computer literacy.

What does a CL-USA sponsor do?

The purpose of the Computer Literacy Initiative is to create realistic standards for computer literacy, secure endorsement from business and industry, raise the public's awareness and make testing and education available, convenient and inexpensive. Part of the problem we face is that there are so many misconceptions about computer literacy that it is first necessary to establish what computer literacy is and is not. CL-USA sponsors are asked to do whatever they can to help make people aware of what the issues are. For individuals this can be as simple as bringing these issues up in conversation and offering guidance. For businesses this can involve more active participation such as:

  • Displaying the CL-USA logo and publications at physical business locations.
  • Displaying the CL-USA logo and (reciprocal) links to the CL-USA home page on their web sites.
  • Allowing use of the company name to endorse and promote CL-USA standards and testing.
  • Helping people become computer literate by recommending CL-USA approved courses, books and other products.

A sponsor can also become an Authorized Testing Location, where people can take the CL-USA test online. Sponsors must verify the identity of the person taking the test and guarantee that the test was taken without any assistance.

Why become a CL-USA sponsor?

A computer literate customer base can provide better communication between seller and buyer and significantly reduce the amount of customer support needed. The Computer Literacy USA "card" is a reliable way to determine if a customer or client is computer literate. Being able to make this distinction can justify giving preferential treatment, in the form of discounts or free support for example. Realizing that becoming computer literate has these advantages will also give incentive to those who need to become computer literate.

As preferred vendors who support computer literacy, CL-USA sponsors will be given a web page at the CL-USA site. This can be used to promote a business and to offer discounts and other perks to computer literate people.

How to become a CL-USA sponsor.

Simply fill out the form on the right column of this page. You will be contacted. If you are approved, we will collect all the necessary information about you and your business, post a web page for you and send promotional material to you.

You will also be given information on becoming a CL-USA partner, which puts you in an advisory role. From the pool of partners a voting board is formed that oversees the making and implementing of CL-USA policies.
